Ran Some Ransom

Collaboration with Lynn Maharas

June 2009
Times Square, NYC
Big Urban Game
project blog

Awarded the Best Use of Space Award at the Come Out & Play Festival 2009, Ran Some Ransom is a Big Urban Game(BUG) played in Times Square. Teams are given a file with transparent maps and photos which they use to solve a ransom note and free the hostage. Teams use their transparent maps to reveal clues by aligning them with existing street signs in Time Square. When the map is perfectly aligned, certain letters are revealed as key clues in solving the mystery ransom note. These clues reveal the location where the hostage is being kept. The team that releases the hostage fastest wins.

UPDATE // Dec. 16, 2009

Ran Some Ransom was recently played at the Winter Games in Berlin as part of Invisible Playground. Thanks to the amazing Sebastian Quack for expanding the life of our game. Here's a video of all the games and watch for a new Berlin version in the spring os 2010.
