My Piece is Still Running

This project plays off of the fashion of early
writers who would paint the back panel of denim jackets with their piece. I thought this
tradition was rad and wanted to employ this singular identity in a collective way. The
performance and documentation serves as the piece.
Taking a graffiti piece I literally
broke it up into several smaller pieces by painting it across the back of a row of shirts. The
intent was that I would have people wear the shirts and run alongside passing trains. As the
runners tried to keep up with the moving train the graffiti piece inevitably was fragmented and
subsequently destroyed. However when the runners moved in unison and within proximity of one
another it gave life back to the piece and created an entirely new work.
It is in this
same way that the internet works by breaking up information into small bits of binary data so
that it can be distributed faster and more effectively. The shirts are painted on one side
lending to the binary idea of 0 and 1 or active and passive. Permutations of the combination
create new work.
